Topic name says it all I think, 256 color GIF images are even smaller. Size does matter ;-)

Yes, you're right. The problem is that the free libraries I've tested create low quality GIFs

GIF should have been free for couple of years AFAIK :-)

Yes, but the algorithms to choose the best palette are different. I tested GD lib and I the results were not excelent.
