I've been using the Chrome Fireshot for a very long time.  Today it just stopped working.  The icon and the menu are visible, but when trying to get a screenshot, nothing happens.

Your Chrome versions looks outdated. Did you try updating your browser to the latest release?
P.S. Just checked FireShot on Chrome 37 - works fine.

I've updated Chrome to Version 36.0.1985.125 m, which is telling me "Google Chrome is up to date."
Any way of troubleshooting/re-installing Fireshot?
Should I consider re-installing Chrome, will I loose the bookmarks and settings of the current one?

Thanks

Yes.  The Fireshot extension v.0.98.53 i had, was corrupt.  Upon reinstalling it, the problem was solved.

Thanks for following up on this.
